King Arthur

Yes, we have yet another slot evolving around the legendary King Arthur. There are what seems dozens of them available and this time it was BetDigital’s turn in collaboration with NextGen Gaming to give it a shot. Expanding symbols in the base game and free spins, as well as a random Jousting feature, are the results of their effort that can lead to a maximum win of 500x your bet in a single spin. The mechanic with expanding symbols remind us of the countless ‘Book of…’ slots, although on this creation it is active in the base game and free spins. Time to find out whether this creation fares better than its competition.

Slot Details

King Arthur is a video slot with five reels, three rows and 10 fixed pay lines. You can visit Camelot on mobile or desktop from 0.10 to 10 credits. The RTP of this medium variance game is set at a rather low 95.03%. Autoplay will allow you to set up 10 to 100 consecutive spins with a mandatory loss limit as to when the run should stop.

A misty, coastal scenery at sundown and the mighty Camelot castle is the backdrop to a rather simple designed game window. The round table with the expanding symbol collector is towering on top of the reels. Unfortunately, the soundtrack is pretty generic and does not add any suspense to the gameplay.

The pay symbols can appear stacked in the base game and free spins and start at the low end with the usual 10 to A card royals. They are followed by the Excalibur sword, the sorcerer Merlin, and Queen Guinevere. King Arthur himself is the wild symbol which will also act as a scatter if it lands in full view. Standard scatters are gold coins with King Arthur’s portrait.

The Random Jousting Feature

The feature can trigger randomly on any spin in the base game. Two knights will appear from the side of the game window to award one of two reel modifiers:

  • Both knights appear on the same row: they will hit in the middle and spread random wilds
  • The knights appear on different rows: each knight will turn minimum three symbols into mystery symbols, which will reveal a common pay symbol, except wilds or scatters.

The Fortune Bet and Table Wheel Feature

On top of the game window is a table wheel with all regular pay symbols which is deactivated as default. When activated via the Fortune Bet button, it will spin in every round and the symbol stopping in view will expand to award scattered pays. However, it comes at an extra cost.

  • Default bet – table wheel is switched off
  • 2x default bet – table wheel is activated with all regular symbols on the wheel
  • 4x default bet – 10 are removed from the wheel
  • 6x default bet – 10 and J are removed from the wheel
  • 8x default bet – 10, J and Q are removed from the wheel
  • 10x default bet – 10, J, Q, K and A are removed from the wheel

Obviously, removing more low-value symbols will increase the chance to have high-value symbols land on the table wheel to expand and award higher wins. But the cost is quite prohibitive, a 0.10 bet can go up to 1.00 credit bet if the maximum level is selected while a 1.00 credit bet will increase to a rather huge 10 credit bet, something even medium rollers consider rarely of doing.

During the base game and free spins, the wheel will turn and randomly stop one symbol in view. All matching symbols on the reels will expand and award scatter pays when minimum three are in view, even when they are on non-consecutive reels. For example, hitting the Merlin symbol on the table wheel and landing three anywhere across the reels, will see them all expand and pay 10 times a three of a kind Merlin symbols. Wilds and scatters do not appear on the table wheel.

The King Arthur Free Spins Feature

Hitting three to five scatters anywhere on the reels will trigger 10, 15 and 20 free spins, which can be indefinitely retriggered. Two scatters will also award five additional free spins. If the round table was activated, then the symbol in view on the triggering spin will be the expanding symbol for the entire feature. In any other case, the wheel spins a new symbol into view on every free spin.

And there is one more twist. A grail can appear on the table wheel and if it appears at the same time on the reels together with a fully stacked wild than the amount on the grail is paid, once for each stacked wild in view.

Final Verdict

In British English you would call this slot ‘not too bad’ but neither overly exciting. The line pays are simply mediocre compared to the likes of Book of Ra or Book of Dead who have the same expanding mechanic. A 500x bet top win in a single spin won’t raise may eyebrows in the playing community. But it is good for regular medium wins.
