Get ready to devour juicy Opal Fruits on the slot from Big Time Gaming. And no, I am not talking about the sweet, chewy candy variety known under the same name. For decades, Opal Fruits was a people’s favourite in the UK and beyond until the producers decided to phase out the name before the turn of the century. The 80s retro design and soundtrack of the slot might jog even more memories of a time less complicated, especially for the older slotting folks among us.

After a series of Megaways slots, it looks like BTG felt it needed to explore new avenues and concepts that will add yet another layer of suspense and entertainment to our slotting sessions. Maybe they thought of recreating the buzz when they released their smash hit Bonanza Megaways.

The result looks indeed like a fusion of Bonanza and Danger High Voltage. But there is more to it than meets the eye. A new mechanic called Triple Reaction is making its debut, where you have a fixed 6×3 game grid and not one but two horizontal reels. Plus, you’ll get to see reactive wins (Bonanza), multiplier wilds (Danger High Voltage) and a free spins round (Bonanza) with progressive multipliers and indefinite retriggers that can lead to wins in excess of 36,000 times your bet.

Slot Details

Opal Fruits is a video slot with six reels and 5,625 fixed ways to win. The six reels have three rows each, while two horizontal reels at the top and bottom add an additional row between reel two and five. Altogether, they form a 3-5-5-5-5-3 game window with the horizontal reels spinning rather oddly but very original in opposite directions of each other.

Wins are awarded for adjacent symbols from left to right only. You can play the slot on desktop or mobile from 0.10 to 20 credits per spin. The RTP of this high variance game is set at 96.75%.

The pay mechanic with reactive wins is similar to other BTG slots. Any winning combination will be part of a reaction where they explode and new symbols cascade into place. The sequence continues as long as new wins occur after a reaction.

The 80s retro design feels a little like The Final Countdown which BTG released just a few weeks earlier. The game window has almost an apple shape, probably on purpose to be in line with the slot theme. Frameless reels are set against a deep space background and dominated as expected by fruits whereas BTG kept their usual colour palette from green to purple on the premium symbols.

Open the game to find a familiar pay symbol set, starting with the card royals from 9 through to A at the low end. Pays range from 0.4x to 0.6x your bet for a single six of a kind. They are followed by green pears, blue plums, red watermelons and purple grapes at the high level. Hit six across the reels to win 0.8x to 50x your stake.

Wild symbols appear in the horizontal reels only. They can land in the base game with an x3 multiplier. Two wilds on the same column will be added as well as multiplied by each other when they hit on different columns. During the free spins, only standard wilds will land on the horizontal reels.

The maximum win multiplier peaks at x81 when four multiplier wilds appear on one reel only and a massive and extremely unlikely x1,296 when you hit four multiplier wilds on the top and bottom reel simultaneously.

The Opal Fruits Free Spins Feature

We all have grown accustomed to the infamous G-O-L-D trigger on Bonanza and it looks like we can add now another slot to the list. On Opal Fruits however, you will need to hit F-R-E-E in a single spin sequence that can go over multiple reactions. An extra scatter landing on the triggering spin will start the win multiplier for the free spins at x5. Any further scatter increases it by x10 for each. For example, a six scatter trigger would start the free spins with an x15 win multiplier.

You will get initially 10 free spins with the well-known progressive win multiplier. It starts at x1 with a normal trigger and increases by x1 for each winning combo, no limits. Your aim is to reach an x10 win multiplier before you run out of free spins as that will trigger +5 extra free spins. From there on, you will receive an additional five free spins every time the win multiplier reaches a multiple of x10.

Final Verdict

Well, we knew Big Time Gaming is up to something ever since we got to know the title of the new slot and were wondering how this creation would look like. And yet again, we were not disappointed as Opal Fruits brings a fresh breeze into casino lobbies without the use of the Megaways engine. The game looks spectacular and adds yet another new element to a slotting session that can lead to huge wins on every spin. We look forward already to start chasing the F-R-E-E combination and of course picking some delicious fruits.
