Hunt for cosmic treasures on the slot from Leander Games. Gem Zone features the newly developed Dynamic Ways game engine that creates from 243 to 3,125 ways to win in the base game and up to 117,649 during the Next Dimension free spins round. It’s a volatile affair featuring a universe filled with valuable gems and star wilds that can lead to wins of up to 10,000 times your bet.

Slot Details

Gem Zone is a video slot with five reels, three to five rows and 243 to 3,125 ways to win in default mode. This will increase to a 6-reel format with up to seven rows and 15,625 to 117,649 ways during the free spins feature. Your voyage through the gem universe on desktop or mobile starts at 0.20 credits and peaks at 200 credits per spin. Some operators might offer it with a lower maximum bet. The game has high volatility with an RTP of 95.80%, which is slightly below the industry average.

A blurry but colourful background announces the colourful reel adventure you are about to embark on when you fire up the game. The reels are dominated by differently coloured gems in a variety of geometrical sizes. They sit well against a purple reel canvas while a pacey soundtrack keeps things lively at all times.

The pay symbols start at the low end with the card royals fro 10 through to A, awarding 0.4x to 0.6x for a single five of a kind. With the additional reel in the bonus feature, this can grow to 0.9x to 1x your bet when six land across the grid. They are followed by geometric gems in pink, blue, yellow, green and red colours. Hit five to win 0.75x to 3x your stake or six to win 1.75x to 7.5x your stake.

A golden star marked with ‘W’ is the wild symbol, substituting for all regular pay symbols. A meteor ball ornamented with gems and marked with ‘Bonus’ acts as the scatter.

Gem Zone Slot Features

You might have asked yourself by now, what are Dynamic Ways. The game engine is an in-house development from Leander Games and has been trademarked. Some might see it as a variation of Megaways as it changes the number of win ways dynamically for every spin.

Well, looking at how the mechanic actually works, it appears like a floating car engine with moving pistons that could get you motion-sick after a while. The basis of the game window is a 5×3 grid with 243 ways which maxes out in the base game at 3,125 ways in a 5×5 format. The result is that there are not two consecutive spins with the same set-up. A display at the top shows the current number of ways.

Each reel has its own Dynamic Zone that is in constant motion between rounds changing size and position on every spin. The symbols that stop within the zone will be active for the current spin and potential wins paid accordingly. Any symbols including scatters behind the blurry cover will not count.

It gets even wilder when you land Bonus scatters on reels one, three and five anywhere within the Dynamic Zone. The game will award 10 New Dimension free spins which can be retriggered. A sixth reel is added to the game window as well as the reel height being increased from maximum five to seven positions. With this set-up, the number of ways is boosted for the duration of the feature, ranging now from 15,625 to 117,649. To retrigger another 10 free spins, you will need to land the scatters on reels two, four and six. There is no limit to the amount of retriggers.

Final Verdict

Well, this was surprising yet short as there is really just one feature to report. However, it can pack quite a punch since it is played with a minimum of 15,625 active win ways. We estimated the win potential at 10,000 times bet but considering that the symbols can land stacked it could easily be much higher. We will confirm the exact numbers once we receive the details.

As for the Dynamic Ways engine, I’m not sure everyone will like it. The constant motion on the reels is something one has to get used to and players who are prone to motion sickness might be turned off rather quickly. Other than that, it plays just fine and could develop into a real Megaways alternative should Leander Games come up with some extra feature that would spice up the gameplay even further. Maybe adding the odd multiplier or random feature would really make it a hit with the slotting community.
