No, Book of Oz is not a slot title about Australia, but rather an adaptation of the fabled fantasy story Wizard of Oz. The Microgaming slot was developed in collaboration with Triple Edge Studios and features the same pay mechanic and win potential in a single spin of 5,000 times the stake as dozens of other Book of…. slot titles. However, it comes with a twist in the base game that will let players respin single reels to hit a missing symbol.

Slot Details

Book of Oz is a video slot with five reels, three rows and 10 fixed pay lines. Go in search of the famous book on mobile or desktop for 0.10 to 25 credits. The RTP of this high variance game is 96.31%, which is very much in line with most other “Book of” slots. Autoplay will allow you to spin 10 to 100 consecutively without interruption.

Graphics and Visuals

Set in the entrance hall of a fantasy mansion with predominantly emerald colours, the game window impresses with crisp graphics and smooth animations. At the bottom of each reel is a display, that will indicate the cost of respinning that individual reel on the current spin. A rather generic but suspenseful soundtrack is only interrupted by the usual reel and win count noises.

Nothing new on the pays symbols when comparing to other similar slots. At the low end are the usual 10 to A card royals, followed by character symbols at the high end. On Book of Oz, they are three potion bottles with different colours and a distinct closure cap – keys, hearts, and a lion. The top paying symbol is the male wizard. Pay for a single five of a kind range from 10x to 500x your stake. The ominous book has a dual function as the wild and scatter symbol.

Reel Respin Feature Explained

Players can respin indefinitely any reel individually after a spin to try and hit missing symbols. The five displays at the bottom of the game window will light up after the reels have stopped to show a bet amount for each reel. The amount is based on which symbol is missing and what kind of win could happen should the missing symbol appear on the respins. The higher the win potential when the symbol lands, the higher the bet amount for the respin. The mechanic also works for scatters when only two appear on a spin.

Book of Oz Free Spins

Hit minimum three scatters anywhere on the reels to trigger 10 free spins, which can be re-triggered indefinitely. Additionally, a coin win of 2x, 20, and 200x is awarded for three, four and five scatters. Before the bonus round starts, one of the nine regular pay symbols is selected as the special symbol. When sufficient land on a free spin, they will expand vertically to cover the entire reel and award wins for all pay lines, which are paid on top of any potential organic wins from the spin. It will need minimum three low-paying symbols or minimum two premium symbols anywhere on the screen to see them expand and award a win.

This is of course the moment where the slot can produce the maximum win on a single spin. The selected special symbol has to be the wizard and if five land in view across the reels, they will expand to pay 10 times the single line win for a five-of-a-kind, resulting in a total win of 5,000x the stake.

Final Verdict

Did the world need another “Book of…” slot? There are now dozens of titles available right now and the number might exceed already 100 games as the pay mechanic with expanding symbols is hugely popular with online casino players. To stand out from the crowd, developers need to balance carefully between keeping the pay mechanic intact but also add some extra feature that will have players coming back.

Book of Oz does that with the respin feature, although we do recommend some caution on the use as it can drain a balance in mere moments if the desired symbol does not land on multiple respins. It is surely the best what we have seen coming from Triple Edge Studios, who is meanwhile striving to develop games exclusively for Microgaming.
