Get your skates on and prepare for the bully-off on Breakaway Deluxe from software giants Microgaming. Keeping the theme of their original popular ice hockey-themed slot Breakaway, this new version provides players with a choice of pay lines, super-stacked wilds and the chance to earn up to an x8 win multiplier in the free spins bonus round.

Slot Details

Breakaway Deluxe is a video slot with five reels and five rows. Players can choose from 18, 38, 68 or 88 pay lines. Available on desktop or mobile, the bet sizes range from 0.18 to 44 credits. The standard RTP of this medium variance game is set at 96% while activating all 88 pay lines increases that to 96.88%.

A blueish background that resembles an ice hockey field is the background to a rather simple game window. On the left,  you will see the buttons to select the number of active pay lines. The reels are dominated by ice hockey players and referees. The soundtrack from the original has been transferred one to one to the sequel.

You will find at the low end an ice hockey field, a player helmet, a pair of ice skates and an ice polishing machine. They are followed by the referee and a number of ice hockey players. Pays are rather odd due to the pay lines and range from 88 to 588 coins for a single five of a kind. In clear numbers and with all paylines active, that would be 1x to 6.68x your stake.

The game logo is the wild symbol, appearing super stacked on the last three reels in the base game and the rear four reels in the free spins round. It performs the usual substitution duties. The scatter on the slot is an ice hockey puck.

Rolling Reels Explained

We have now probably half a dozen of names for what is basically tumbling reels with exploding win combinations. On Breakaway Deluxe they are called rolling reels. After a winning combination is paid out, these symbols will explode making way for a new set of symbols to take their place which in turn can award future winning combinations. The sequence ends when no new win occurs after a tumble.

The Random Smashing Wild Feature

Microgaming kept this feature from the original. Two hockey players can appear randomly at the start of any spin in the base game and turn two, three or four reels wild for a guaranteed win. The sequence continues than as usual with the wins exploding and new symbols dropping into place.

The Breakaway Deluxe Free Spins Feature

The feature is triggered by landing three or more ice puck scatter symbols anywhere on the reels in one spin sequence. Initially, 12 free spins are awarded with an increasing multiplier trail and growing wilds. The free spins can be retriggered.

Wilds are now super stacked across from reel two to five during free spins. The stacks will increase by one extra wild per free spin. Plus, the Deluxe version kept the progressive win multiplier for consecutive winning tumbles within one spin sequence. It will grow from x1 on the first win to x8 on the fifth win. Any subsequent wins in the same spin sequence will all be multiplied by x8. The multiplier resets to x1 once no new win occurs after a tumble.

Final Verdict

Don’t know what to say really. Microgaming seems to be hell-bend on destroying their stellar reputation to create blockbuster slots that all players can’t wait to spin the reels on. Gone are the years of Thunderstruck II or Immortal Romance and in come the clones, the boring games with little to now excitement and low win potential. One can only hope they will wake up one day.
