Lock A Luck

Get ready for a return to classic slot action with a twist on Lock A Luck by All41 Studios powered by Microgaming. Traditional slot machine symbols spin on the reels which can link up to synchronize the symbols and lead to wins of up to 1,333.33 times your bet on a single spin.

Don’t be surprised when you load the game as you might recognize the reel mechanic after the first few spins. Cue in Twin Spin from NetEnt released in 2013 and a player favourite for many years. It took Microgaming that long to decide whether to clone it which extends beyond the mechanic to most of the pay symbols. The bet sizes and paytable are the only parts that show some significant difference. Whereas Twin Spin can pay a maximum of 1,080 times your bet in a single spin, it’s cloned twin (pun intended) will grace you with up to 1,333x your bet. Not that it makes it better than original but it is a difference, at least.

Slot Details

Lock A Luck is a video slot with five reels, three rows and 243 ways to win. Pays are awarded for three to five matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right only. Available on desktop and mobile devices, you can bet from 0.20 to 60 credits per spin. The game has medium volatility with an RTP of 96.37%.

The visuals are as generic as they can get on an online slot. A simple blue background is fronted by a rectangular game window with equally generic pay symbols that try (but fail) to convey some of the charm of fruit machines from years gone by. Some might like it while for others it will be a big turn-off.

The pay symbols start at the low end with the card royals from 9 through to A, awarding 1x to 1.5x your stake for a single five of a kind. They are complemented by cherries, 4-leaf clovers, golden horseshoes, red 7s and shiny diamonds. Hit five across the reels to win 6x to 50x your bet. A simple icon marked with the word itself is the wild symbol, appearing on reels two to four only and substituting for all pay symbols when it is part of a winning combo.

Lock A Luck Slot Features

Slot connoisseurs won’t need a description of the reel mechanic and only feature on this slot but for the sake of writing a full review and for players who never tried Twin Spin, here’s what you can look forward to on Lock A Luck.

At the start of every spin, minimum two reels will link up and when the dust settles they will display identical symbols. Now, having two reels synchronized won’t get you the mega wins but watch out when the soundtrack goes into a crescendo as will start to link three to five reels for the current spin. Meaning you will get identical symbols on all reels. Now, this can be a different one on each row but also a full screen of matching symbols. The payouts for full screens start at 243x the bet.

After playing the game extensively in demo mode and looking at the paytable we are sure that just like on the original, you will not be able to hit a full screen of premiums. The diamonds pay 50x your bet for single five of a kind, having that 243 ways would exceed 10,000x bet, but as mentioned, the maximum you can win in a single spin tops at 1,333.33x your stake.

Final Verdict

Yawn, after having a nap in between writing this review because there is simply nothing exciting to say about clones, my verdict for Lock A Luck is as you might expect by now not very positive. Nothing wrong with cloning or let’s say taking inspiration from other developers but make at least an effort to add your own twist to the gameplay. Players will see the effort and appreciate it.

As it stands now, Lock A Luck is plainly a copy that will never reach the popularity of Twin Spin as the reel mechanic itself starts to get outdated. But as the last few years have shown, it has been very typical for Microgaming to go with designs that bring back memories of yesteryear. Someone should maybe let them know that copying and cloning time and again won’t make it any better.
