Travel to the Far East in search of lost fortunes on the slot from Pulse 8 Studios, powered by Microgaming. Treasure of Lion City is taking you on a historic reel expedition to uncover hidden riches worth up to 2,600 times your bet. When looking at Lion City, there are two places in Asia which are referred to by that name. The first is the magnificent city state of Singapore, derived from the Malay words “singa” for lion and “pura” for city. However, the more mysterious location is an ancient Chinese city known as Shi Cheng which was submerged in water in the 1950s when the government decided to build a dam on the Xin’an River, creating a huge lake in the process.

Pulse 8 Studios is the latest addition to the Microgaming stable of partner studios that develop games exclusively for the Quickfire platform, They are most probably referring to the latter of the two cities on Treasure of Lion City, creating a fast-paced game with rolling reels, symbol transformations and progressive multipliers. However, there is no bonus game or free spins round to look forward.

Slot Details

Treasures Of Lion City is a cascading video slot with five reels, three rows and 25 fixed pay lines. Wins are paid for three to five matching symbols on a line from left to right only. Two wild symbols will also award consolation prizes. You can explore the submerged city on desktop or mobile from 0.25 to 50 credits per spin. The game has medium volatility with a disappointingly low RTP of 94.20%.

Loading the game will see you descend into a multi-coloured underwater cave with stalactites hanging from the top and sun rays protruding via an opening on the left. The game window is a solid rock guarded by two mystical lions. The feature bar at the top of the reels will start illuminating when you score wins. An epic orchestra soundtrack is well mixed with stone falling noises as the symbols drop into view.

The pay symbols start with rather mundane card royals from J through to A, awarding 4x to 5x your stake for a single five of a kind. They are followed by more fitting symbols at the high level – blue and green gems, elixir vials, warrior helmets and overflowing treasure chests. Hit five on a line to win 6x to 18x your stake. A golden mask is the wild and top-paying symbol, substituting for all other symbols. Scoring a full line across the reels will yield 20x your bet. There are no scatter or bonus symbols on this slot.

Treasure of Lion City Slot Features

If you ever played the first slot coming from Pulse 8 Studios called Relic Seekers, then you will know most of what is to be expected on this creation. The Rolling Reels mechanic has also been used Lara Croft: Temples and Tombs or on the Jungle Jim slots although it comes with a variety of modifiers on Treasure of Lion City instead of just a progressive multiplier.

As the game has no bonus features, it relies heavily on two reel mechanics and modifiers to make your treasure hunt a worthwhile expedition. At the start of a spin sequence, symbols drop from the top onto the reels and any winning combination will be exploding after the payout to make room for new symbols to fall into place. The Rolling Reels process will continue until no new wins occur after a cascade.

The second part is the Win Meter feature. Once you load the game, you will observe a progression bar on top of the game window. It will activate the soon you hit a win on the initial cascade at the start of a new round and will illuminate progressively the more consecutive winning cascades you hit in the same spin sequence.

  • 1st winning cascade: Elixir vials turn wild until the end of the round
  • 3rd winning cascade: Warrior helmets turn wild until the end of the round
  • 5th winning cascade: Treasure chests turn wild until the end of the round
  • 7th winning cascade: An x3 win multiplier is activated
  • 9th winning cascade: The win multiplier increases to x9
  • 11th winning cascade and thereafter: The win multiplier increases to x27

All modifiers and multipliers are reset once the spin sequence concludes. The wins from the round are accumulated and paid in one amount. Just as a reference, a full line of wild symbols which pays as default 20x your bet, will yield 540x your stake with the maximum multiplier.

Final Verdict

Well, that concludes the reel treasure hunt in the mysterious underwater world that some people call Atlantis of the East. While the design conveys the storyline rather authenticly, the gameplay was pretty bland. It took me over 400 spins to activate once the x3 multiplier and in all test runs I never got any higher up, which is quite disappointing. Add to that the mediocre RTP of just 94.20% and the excitement of maybe hitting some super mega wins on this slot vanes quickly. It might be good for the odd spin once in a while but doesn’t feel like a game for an extended session.
