Butterfly Staxx 2
Enter a magical world of sparkling butterflies and blooming flowers on the slot from NetEnt. Butterfly Staxx 2 is the next in the Staxx series of low volatility games with an appeal to recreational players. Up to three game windows, Butterfly Respins and two different bonus features can lead to wins of up to 240 times your bet.
Butterfly Staxx 2 is a video slot with five reels, four rows and 40 fixed pay lines. Wins are paid for two to five matching symbols on a line from left to right only. Your enchanted reel adventure on desktop or mobile starts at 0.25 credits and peaks at a massive 1,250 credits per spin. Remains to be seen which operators will list the game with the maximum possible bet. The game has a low volatility with an RTP of 96.35%.
The design from the original Butterly Staxx slot has not changed much. You still have the magical flower vines on each side of the game window opening up in the respin feature. Only that now they are growing on stone walls with a mountain range in the far distance. A tranquil soundtrack is accompanied by the usual reel sounds.
All pay symbols bar scatters can appear stacked covering a number of positions on a reel. They start at the low end with the card royals from J through to A, awarding 0.8x your bet for a single five of a kind or 32x bet for a full screen. At the high end (if you can call it that), you will find flowers in blue, purple and red colours as well as the all-important butterflies. Hit five on a line to win 1.6x to 2x your stake or 64x to 80x your stake for a full screen, which is mediocre but pretty standard for such a low-volatility game.
The wild symbol is a blossoming flower marked with the word itself, substituting for all symbols except scatters. An arrangement with pink roses and marked with the word itself acts as the scatter, appearing on reels one, three and five only.
Butterfly Staxx 2 Slot Features
Listening to the tranquil soundtrack almost lets you forget that there are actually bonus features on this game. There is one respin feature in the base game and a choice of two bonus features when you hit three scatters in one spin.
During the base game, hitting a full stack of butterfly symbols on any reel will trigger the Respin feature. All butterfly symbols in view are moved to the leftmost position on the same row and one respin is awarded. Any further butterfly symbols landing on the respin will move as well to the left until no further symbols land on the reels or the screen is completely filled with butterfly symbols.
However, there is one kicker that can make quite a difference to your winnings from the respins. If you manage to cover the two leftmost reels with butterflies, a second game window is added with the first reel occupied by butterflies. Get three reels covered to have then a third game window opening up. Each reel set is spinning independently and any butterfly symbols will move to the left on each screen. It is sufficient to hit at least one butterfly symbol on any of the three windows to keep the respins going.
The feature ends when no further butterflies land on a respin or all three reels sets are filled with butterfly symbols. Wins are paid once the feature concludes. The maximum win from the respins peaks at a rather mediocre 240x your bet.
Hit scatters on reel one, three and five in one spin to trigger the bonus feature selector. The game will lead to a new screen, displaying two options. You can pick any of the two on each occasion.
- Butterfly Spins: You’ll get five free spins with only dormant and active cocoons on the reels, which cannot be retriggered. The feature is played on all three reels sets. Any active cocoon landing will turn into a butterfly and move to the leftmost reel. Line wins are paid on each spin. I estimate the maximum win from the free spins to be around 240 times your bet.
- Butterfly Frenzy Pick-And-Click Bonus Game: The game leads to a new screen with butterflies fluttering through the screen. You’ll get 10 initial picks to reveal coin wins or a stage upgrade. There are maximum five stages, each with increasing coins wins. The lowest in stage one is 0.4x your bet and the highest is 5x your bet in stage five. Overall, you can win roughly 150x your bet for the entire bonus game
To be honest, for some reason I was waiting for something spectacular when Netent announced Butterfly Staxx 2. But all we got is a low-volatility drivel that will barely see players lifting an eyebrow. The game might be directed at recreational slotting folk but even they expect some sort of decent win potential. Visually, it looks good and the soundtrack gives it a magical feel, but turning the reels has nothing magical or surprising whatsoever.
