Review
Experience the mysterious world of the “grimoire” on the slot from NetEnt. Originating from the French language, a grimoire is a textbook of magic that contains among other things instructions on how to summon spirits, cast spells and build amulets. Make sure to cast your spell on the reels of this slot to hit mystery books that will clone symbols and enter the free spins round with sticky mystery symbols for wins of up to 800 times your stake.
Slot Details
Golden Grimoire is a video slot with five reels, four rows and 20 fixed pay lines. Your foray into the world of magic books will cost you from 0.20 to 400 credits. The RTP of this low variance game is set at 96.44%. Play the slot on any mobile, tablet or desktop device across all OS platforms. Use Autoplay if you don’t want to spin the reels manually and set up 10 to 500 consecutive spins without interruption.
Graphics and Visuals
A mysterious room with rustic armoires, dimly lit by candles and the moonlight that shines through a giant round window, is the backdrop to a completely frameless game window. In between the spins, ancient hieroglyphs illuminate the walls. A rumbling soundtrack with a classical underlining explodes into a dramatic crescendo when the mystery book reveals matching symbols and on teaser spins.
Pay symbols
The low-value symbols are glowing card suits – diamonds with a purple glow, spades with a blue glow, clubs with a green glow and hearts with a red glow. They are followed by four differently coloured gems, each held by a mystical critter – a purple gem held by scarab, a blue gem held by a snake, a green gem held by a kraken-like creature and a red gem held by a spider. Pays for a single five of a kind range from 0.75x to 5x the stake. A full screen of the red gem will award a win of 200x your stake.
The wild symbol is a golden skull, appearing only when revealed from the mystery symbol transformation and substitutes for all symbols except scatters. Scatters are an artistic keyhole with the word itself across it.
Mystery Symbol Feature
The only feature in the base game is triggered by mystery grimoires landing on reels three, four and five. The mystery books will transform into one common pay symbol including wilds. If the revealed symbol matches the symbol on reel one then all symbols between the mystery symbol and reel one turn into the same symbol. If the revealed symbol is wild then all symbols up to reel two will turn into a wild symbol.
The Golden Grimoire Free Spins
The best chance to hit bigger wins on this slot comes in the free spins. Hitting scatters on reel one, three and five will award 8 free spins, which cannot be retriggered. The mystery books can now appear on reels two to five. Any landing on a free spin will turn into a sticky mystery symbol and will stay locked in place until the end of the round. All sticky and any further mystery symbols landing on the spin will reveal again one common pay symbol and connect to the front reel using the same mechanic as in the base game.
Final Verdict
After Netent showed with Vikings and Turn of Fortune that they still have the ‘mojo’ to produce entertaining slots, the trend with Strolling Staxx and now Golden Grimoire moves again towards low variance games with little win potential and unsophisticated gameplay. Understandably, they are trying to cover all types of players, be it fans of low or high variance games. However, Golden Grimoire is just too bland for our liking and gave us the feeling that it will be yet another typical egg-timer slot from Netent.
