A timeless NetEnt favourite is making a glorious comeback. Twin Spin has just received a Megaways upgrade, featuring now dynamic reels and up to 117,649 ways to win. Not missing are the popular synched reels and wild substitutions, all further boosted by an Avalanche reel mechanic and a Free Spins round with multiplier wilds and retriggers that can lead to wins of up to 20,000 times your bet.

Slot Details

Twin Spins Megaways is a cascading video slot with six dynamic reels, up to seven rows and 64 to 117,649 ways to win. The number of ways is randomly determined for every spin by selecting between two and seven symbols for each reel. Pays are awarded for three to five matching symbols landing on adjacent reels from left to right only. You can spin the classic reels from 0.10 to 200 credits per spin (operators can choose a lower max bet). The game has medium to high volatility with an RTP of 96.04%.

Twin Spin together with Starburst, Gonzo’s Quest and Dead or Alive forms the group of the most iconic slots to ever emanate from the Swedish studios of NetEnt. The original was released in 2013, with the Megaways makeover demonstrating that the classic design has aged well. NetEnt left it virtually unchanged and added only a few bits here and there to cater for the larger game window and different reel mechanics. A somewhat livelier soundtrack serves as the main audio.

The symbol set is virtually unchanged, starting at the low end with card royals from 9 through to A and awarding 0.4x to 1x your bet for a single six of a kind. They are followed by cherries, bells, BARs, red 7s and diamonds. Hit six across the reels to win 1x to 10x your stake. A flashing icon marked with the word itself is the wild symbol, appearing on reels two to six only and substituting for all regular pay symbols. The slot logo underlined with ‘Scatter’ is the bonus symbol with minimum five needed in view to trigger the free spins feature.

Twin Spin Megaways Slot Features

After Piggy Riches Megaways and Gonzo’s Quest Megaways, NetEnt took on the challenge to upgrade another slot from their extensive portfolio by including it into a Megaways game engine under licence from Big Time Gaming. The first two were still using the UI from Red Tiger, making Twin Spin Megaways the first slot in full NetEnt colours. Time to take a closer look at what has been done to the original.

The Twin Reel feature is still in play on every spin, linking two two six adjacent reels and synchronizing the symbols on them. When the reels stop, all linked reels will display identical reel positions and symbols. However, symbols might be different after an initial win is removed by the Avalanche feature. The mechanic is combined with the dynamic reels of the Megaways game engine, which creates a random number of ways to win for each spin by selecting anything from 2 to 7 symbols for each reel, leading to virtually indefinite layouts from 64 to 117,649 ways.

Next to come into play is the tumbling reels mechanic, called Avalanche feature on NetEnt slots. Land three or more symbols on adjacent reels starting from the leftmost and you have a winner. The symbols from a winning combination will explode to make room for new symbols to tumble into place. The chain reaction will continue as long as new winners occur after a cascade, allowing you to potentially win multiple times in a single spin sequence.

Twin Spin Megaways Free Spins

Having five scatters in view at the end of a spin sequence, which happens on average 1:409 spins, will trigger 15 Free Spins. Any further scatter will add +1 free spin to the tally. The feature can be indefinitely retriggered with the same combinations. Two changes to the base game will play a significant role in scoring big wins during the bonus round. First, any synced reels will always have the maximum seven reel positions on every free spin.

Second, wilds landing on a free spin can display an x2 or x3 win multiplier which will be applied if they are part of the combo. Only one multiplier wild can land at the same time unless they appear on synched reels. More than one multiplier will be multiplied by each other. However, they cannot occur when more than four reels are synched in a free spin, limiting the maximum win multiplier to x81. The feature ends once you run out of free spins.

Final Verdict

Ever since NetEnt announced the release a few months ago, we were eagerly awaiting to get the first look at Twin Spin Megaways, especially because it is the first to feature their own UI. The creative team did well in preserving most of the DNA from the original while integrating typical Megaways mechanics into the gameplay. The result is a playable slot from just 0.10 credits that has a staggering win potential of up to 20,000 times your bet, although the odds to hit that are less than 1:34 billion spins. Taking note from the datasheet, the game is geared towards more instances of wins in the 1,000x range with a frequency of just 1:182,000 spins. A clear negative are the rather rare triggers to sync more than just two reels, which was quite common on the original. Well, it is Netent’s first, leaving plenty of room for improvements for future Megaways creations.
