Step inside a sacred forest guarded by fairies and elves on the slot from NetEnt. Wilderland is taking you to a fantasy kingdom filled with magic and enchanted pixie dust on a quest to discover what treasure awaits you. Packed with a range of different wilds, an Activation Zone turning wilds into Walking Wilds, a random Magic Wild feature and a Free Spins bonus round, it can lead to wins of up to 240 times your bet on every single spin. Literally a wild feast.
Wilderland is a video slot with five reels, three rows and 20 fixed pay lines. Wins are awarded for three to five matching symbols on a line from left to right only. You can enter the enchanted forest kingdom on desktop or mobile from 0.20 to a mindboggling 1,000 credits per spin. The game has low to medium volatility with an RTP of 96.16%.
Loading the game will bring you into the midst of an enchanted forest where an elven huntress is guarding the hidden treasures within. Immersed in a purple hue and sparsely lit by the protruding moonlight. the frameless game window allows a peek into the forest with trees that come alive. An enchanted soundtrack is minutely synchronized to the action on the reels.
The pay symbols start at the low end with the card suits – clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades – designed in leaf-style with different colours as they go through the seasons of a year, awarding 1x to 1.5x your bet for a single five of a kind. They are followed by premiums encased in Celtic frames – ring, pendant, bow with arrow quiver, fox and the elven huntress. Hit five on a line to win 3.5x to a mere 6x your stake.
Taking cue from the game title, it comes with no less than five different wilds ranging from standard to expanding wild (more to that shortly), substituting for all regular symbols bar scatters and yielding the same win as the top elven symbol. An intricate icon marked with ‘S’ acts as the scatter on this slot.
Wilderland Slot Features
Expecting something intense with suspenseful gameplay when NetEnt announced the slot a few months ago, I am rather disappointed to find a rather tame affair that is aimed at recreational players. You could just as well play Butterfly Staxx 2 or Temple Nudges, they all rely on a similar math model which will give you plenty of playtime for your buck but little or no chance to hit any substantial wins. The stunning visuals alone on Wilderland would deserve better let alone us slot nerds. Well, let’s take a look at what the elven huntress is guarding so ferociously in the enchanted forest kingdom.
Core to the gameplay are the different wilds that will deliver the bulk of the wins. The standard wild can appear on any reel while thee other four wilds will come into play during the Forest Treasure feature. Considering the number of wilds, you could end up with a full screen of them, although the payout would be a mediocre 120x bet only and 240x should you be lucky to have sufficient multiplier wilds.
When loading the game, you will note that the middle row is highlighted as an Activation Zone at all times in the base game, which will give you a hint as to how the features are triggered. You will need to land two standard wilds adjacent to each other in the zone to trigger the Forest Treasure feature. The wilds will transform into Walking Wilds, moving by one reel to the left on each of the following respins until all have dropped off the screen – Jack and the Beanstalk-style with the difference that the respins are not free. Before they start moving, they will turn randomly into one of the four other wilds – Expanding Wild, x2 Multiplier Wild, Scatter Wild combo or stay as regular Walking Wild.
Any wild landing adjacent to the Walking Wilds bloc will turn into a walking wild too and extend the feature. It will end when there are no more walking wilds on the screen. Worth noting is that more than one x2 multiplier wild in a combo will see the win being multiplier x2 for each wild. Get five on a line and you will pocket 192x your stake.
There is though one twist that could retrigger the walking wilds. Any time an Expanding Wild leaves the screen on reel one, the game can trigger Magic Wild feature, which will see then the expanded wild magically reappear on reel five. The process of moving by one reel is then repeated until finally, all walking wilds have vanished.
Hitting three or more scatters and/or scatter wilds anywhere on the reels in one spin will trigger the Free Spins round. You won’t get a set amount of spins but instead one Walking Wild is placed on the middle position of reel five. You will get additional Walking Wilds placed randomly on the reels if you triggered the round with four or more scatters. Theoretically, you could have a 15-scatter trigger, albeit winning the lottery is probably easier than that.
The Activation Zone is now expanded to the entire screen, providing more chances to trigger the Forest Treasure feature. Two wilds landing adjacent anywhere will get it started while the Magic Wild feature can activate for any walking wild, not just the expanded type. The round will end when you have no more Walking Wilds on the screen.
Well, that was surely a wild feast, just not the variety we would have liked to see. You could have all the wilds in the world on this reels and the win potential is still mediocre. While NetEnt deserves praise for the visuals and animations, they failed badly with the math model. It all but makes sure that your balance will dwindle in a slow fashion while keeping you entertained with some good-looking eye candy, making any comeback all but impossible should you stay long enough to lose an amount that exceeds 100x your standard bet.
