Review
Journey into outer space to witness the powers of the Diamond Vortex on the slot from Play’n GO. Your reel voyage will be full of twists and turns as you navigate on the three rotating rings of the hexagonal grid. Cascading symbols, cluster pays, Core Wilds with progressive multipliers, random symbol transformations and a free spins round with unlimited retriggers and multiplier can lead to wins of up to 5,000 times your bet.
Slot Details
Diamond Vortex is a hexagonal grid slot with seven symbols across the board and cluster pays. Wins are awarded for six or more matching symbols landing adjacently connected. You can journey into outer space on desktop or mobile from 0.20 to 100 credits per spin. The game has medium volatility (7/10) with a default RTP of 96.20%. Beware, secondary RTP settings at 94.20% or even as low as 91.20% are offered, always check the help file to find out which version you will be playing.
A deep space scene with a colourful rotating vortex is the background of the hexagonal grid filled with valuable gems. The display to the left will keep track of all wins as the gameplay can get slightly confusing at times. A rather relaxed space soundtrack goes into a fuller and livelier crescendo during the bonus feature while the grid itself is set ablaze.
The pay symbols start at the low end with small gems in different shapes and colours – orange, blue, green and red, awarding across the board 10x your bet for clusters of 35 or more symbols. They are followed by more elaborate gem arrangements in yellow, turquoise, green and flaming red. Hit cluster of 35+ symbols to win 20x to 100x your stake. The game has two wilds – Core and Sticky Wilds – both substituting for all regular symbols (more to these shortly). A colourful planet marked with Bonus acts as the scatter.
Diamond Vortex Slot Features
Play’n GO is undoubtedly one of the best grid slot developers, gracing us with their creations on a frequent basis, the latest being the explosive Gold Volcano and the notoriously loud but fun Twister Sister. For Diamond Vortex, they chose the hexagonal grid from Honey Rush with symbols dropping from the top at the start of a spin sequence. To score a win, you need to land clusters of minimum six symbols which is similar to a 3-of-a-kind on a reel slot. Any winning clusters will be removed after the win is paid and new symbols drop into place, potentially creating new clusters. The spin sequence continues until no new wins occur after a fresh drop.
And there is more, actually a lot more. The game structure is divided into three concentric rings, each containing a highlighted fixed Zone at the top of the ring and a moving Spot marked in turquoise, pink and orange colours, which starts at the bottom of each ring and moves towards the Zone as the spin sequence progresses.
The Rotate feature is triggered after every winning cascade within a spin sequence. Before new symbols drop down, the innermost ring rotates clockwise, the centre ring rotates anti-clockwise, and the outer ring rotates clockwise. All symbols currently on the rings follow the flow before the new symbols then cascade into empty spaces.
At any point, Sticky Wilds can come into play as they can land with every symbol cascade. They will move towards Core Wild which is perma-fixed in the centre of the grid. Whenever a Sticky Wild is part of a winning cluster, it will not be removed from the grid and instead hops into an adjacent ring, always moving closer to the Core Wild. The Consume feature triggers the moment the Sticky Wild reaches the Core Wild, absorbing it on its final move. The win multiplier on the Core Wild starts at x1 and increases by x1 for every consumed Sticky Wild, up to a maximum of x20. Only winning clusters containing the Core Wild will benefit from the multiplier. In the base game, the multiplier resets to x1 between spins.
Remember Spots and Zones? The Transform feature will trigger when a Spot reaches its correspondent Zone location within a single spin sequence. All symbols within the ring will be transformed into a random pay symbol expect wilds and scatters. Should all three Spots land in their Zone positions at the same time, then all three rings will be transformed simultaneously. In the base games, spots reset to their bottom position between spins.
Landing a Bonus scatter in a Zone will trigger the Free Spins feature with each awarding 5 free spins, up to 15 when one lands in each of the three Zones. Retriggers are available via the same mechanic. During the feature, the Core Wild Multiplier and Spot progression do not reset between free spins.Â
Final Verdict
Well, that was quite something. It all sounds super complicated and might make you dizzy occasionally but it becomes all clear once you have seen the mechanics play out a few times. Basically, land winning clusters to start a chain reaction and get Sticky Wilds into the Core Wild in the centre to increase the win multiplier. Trigger the Transform and the Free Spins feature and big wins of up to 5,000 times bet are up for grabs.
