Rising from the ashes is a saying we often use in circumstances where something surprisingly gets back to life. The roots of the saying come from Greek mythology, where the Phoenix was symbolizing the sun and according to legend was reborn from the ashes of its predecessor. However, Play’n GO has taken the majestic bird to the Mesoamerican region in Phoenix Reborn to play a major role on their Aztec themed slot. We wonder whether Tōnatiuh, the Aztec god of the sun, would approve of the move.

Play’n GO is letting the Phoenix rise in a sea of flames to a full reel-height wild whenever it appears on a spin in the base game and on every free spin. Hit an entire screen of the mighty bird and you will be rewarded with 1,000 times your bet.

Slot Details

Phoenix Reborn is a video slot with five reels, six rows and 40 fixed pay lines. You can encounter the majestic creature on desktop or mobile from 0.20 to 100 credits. The default RTP of this highly volatile game is set at 96.51%, however, some operators might offer it at the lower setting of 94.51%. Check the help files after loading the game to find out which version you are playing.

Graphics and Visuals

An awe-inspiring Aztec temple on a misty morning is the fitting background that does justice to the ingenuity and building capabilities of the Aztec people. The 5×6 game window is carved into stone with a range of jungle animals and two warriors dominating the reels. A tribal soundtrack rounds off a well-designed slot.

Pay Symbols

The Aztec theme continues with the pay symbols. At the low end you will find the card suits – clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades – and a sun symbol, all carved into stone in Aztec style and paying 0.75x your bet for a single five of a kind. They are followed by toucans, snakes and black panthers on the medium level, each paying 3.75x your stake when five fall into line. The two premium symbols – a male and a female warrior – appear stacked up to six symbols high at all times, awarding 7.5x and 10x your bet respectively for a five of a kind.

The Phoenix is the wild and top paying symbol on the slot with 25x your stake for a single five across the reels. It will expand whenever it appears on a reel to cover all six symbols positions and perform the usual substitution duties. The Aztec theme is completed with a tribal mask that acts as the scatter.

The Rise of the Phoenix Bonus Feature

Apart from the expanding wilds, there is only a free spins feature on the Phoenix Reborn slot. Hitting three, four or five tribal mask scatters anywhere on the reels in one spin will trigger Rise of the Phoenix bonus round with 7, 12 an 20 free spins respectively. Two to five scatters on a free spin will award an additional 3 to 20 free spins, and that without limits.

It is all about the expanding Phoenix wilds in the bonus round as it is guaranteed to appear on one reel in every free spin, providing more opportunities to hit a win. The maximum on a spin would be 1,000x your bet when Phoenix wilds land on each reel. The overall win potential from the bonus round is capped at the Play’n GO usual 5,000x your stake.

Final Verdict

Phoenix Reborn is not a spectacular slot but still a solid effort from Play’n GO. The graphics and animation are of high quality as expected and the game plays smoothly at all times. I missed though a surprising element somewhere, no matter if in the base game or bonus round. Maybe some multiplier or wild reel cloning that would have heightened the suspense and given more potential for mega wins.
