Join Rich Wilde on a hair-raising quest for vast treasures and ancient relics on the slot from Play’n GO. The Tome of Madness is based on “The Cthulhu Mythos” by horror writer H.P. Lovecraft where a fictional universe is filled with cosmic horrors, occult forces and giant monsters. An exhilarating reel adventure awaits on this grid slot with a variety of wilds, special reel modifiers, a chargeable Portal, the mysterious Necronomicon and the ultimate, Cthulhu, a Mega Wild that will fall onto the grid in true Gargantoon style to create wins of up to 2,000x your stake.

Slot Details

Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness is a cascading video slot game played on a 5×5 grid. At the start of a spin sequence, symbols drop down from the top to fill the grid.  Wins are awarded for clusters of four or more symbols that are directly connected, either horizontally, vertically or both. Any winning combos are removed, and new symbols drop into the empty spaces. The game continues to cascade until no new winning combinations occur after a drop.

Your quest for treasures on desktop or mobile starts at 0.10 and peaks at 100 credits per spin. The game is highly volatile (10/10) with a default RTP of 96.59%. However, some casino operators might choose a reduced value of 94.52%. Always check the help files to see what version you will be playing.

The pay symbols start at the low end with green, blue, red and purple gems, paying 2x to 10x your bet for a cluster of 10 or more symbols (which is similar to a five of a kind on a standard slot). They are followed by artefacts carrying gems in the same colours – a mask with a green gem, a gold ring with a blue gem, a dagger with a red gem and an amulet with a purple gem. Pays for clusters of 10+ symbols range from 30x to 100x your stake.

There are three types of wilds on the slot. The mysterious book Necronomicon is the standard wild while Rich Wilde acts as an x2 multiplier wild. An octopus-like creature with a single giant eye is the Mega Wild that can only come into play at the end of a bonus round.

Rich Wild and the Tome of Madness Slot Features

The game is packed to the brim with extra wilds, portals and modifiers. It will all make sense once you played it for a few minutes. Maybe taking Sweet Alchemy or Reactoonz for a spin will give you an indication as to what you can expect as some mechanics are the same.

First up are mysterious random Eye Marks that can appear at any time anywhere on the grid. Hit a winning cluster that covers the Eye Mark location to open the eye and you will have two special wilds added to the grid once no more wins occur after a symbol cascade.

The main control of the game though falls to the Portal on the left of the game window. The number of winning symbols is added to a meter which will charge the portal and trigger modifiers as well as features at specific intervals. Remember though that wilds are not sticky and will be removed when they were part of a winning cluster.

  • After 7 symbols: Two special wilds are added to the grid
  • After 14 symbols: Two special wilds are added to the grid
  • Hit a win with a special wild to trigger the Abyss Portal Effect
  • After 27 symbols: A further two special wilds are added to the grid
  • Hit a win with a special wild to trigger the Void Portal Effect
  • After 42 symbols: The Other World Free Round is triggered.

OK, that is quite a lot to go through. The special wilds are standard or multiplier wilds which will help you to score more winning cascades to progress towards the 42 required symbols for the bonus round. The game will always continue normally after any won effects have been applied as long as you keep scoring wins after a cascade. In any other case, all counters, special wilds and Eye Marks are reset or removed before the next spin starts.

  • Abyss Portal Effect: removes a row or column, starting from the winning special wild symbol. The symbols removed will contribute further to charging the Portal. If the Abyss Effect removes another special wild, the removal will also be initiated from that symbol.
  • Void Portal Effect: randomly picks one of the regular symbols and removes all instances from the grid. The number of removed symbols is added to the Portal charge meter.

The Other World Free Round is one free round with three random Portal Effects. If the Portal is over-charged in excess of 42 symbols, an additional Portal Effect is added for every 3 additional winning symbols collected, up to a maximum of 7. During the bonus round, a randomly chosen Portal Effect will be triggered when there are no further wins after a symbol drop:

  • Special Wilds: four special wilds are added to the grid.
  • Abyss: four special wilds added to the grid. Hit a win with any special wild to trigger the Abyss Portal Effect
  • Void: four special wilds added to the grid. Hit a win with any special wild to trigger the Void Portal Effect

During the bonus round, 11 or 12 Eye Marks are visible on the grid. Open an eye by forming a win in the eye’s location. If all eyes have been opened, the 2×2 MEGA WILD Cthulhu symbol (giant one-eyed octopus aka brother to Gargantoon) is added at the top of the grid and moves down by one row with each cascade before disappearing. Cascades continue until no more wins are achieved.

Final Verdict

Rich Wild and the Tome of Madness feels like a fusion of Sweet Alchemy and Reactoonz. Fast-paced gameplay, crisp graphics, stunning animations and big win potential – slotting heaven. We applaud Play’n GO for descending from the high horse of potential mega win numbers of 5,000 times bet or more that no one ever seems to hit and opting for something more realistic that is bound to happen more often than just once in a trillion spins. Madness, in a positive way!
