The Sword and The Grail
The Arthurian legend comes to life on the slot from Play’n GO. The Sword and the Grail is taking you on a high-volatility reel journey to Camelot Castle with random wild multipliers of up to x100 in the base game and a 4-level free spins round with progressive multipliers that can lead to wins of up to 10,000 times your bet.
Although Play’n GO has released some truly original slots lately such as Sabaton and Game of Gladiators, they do seem to be on a mission of maybe not straight cloning but semi-cloning popular slots from other providers. Well, let’s call it taking inspiration from other designs as they indeed add their own little twist that separates them from the originals.
It all goes back to maybe Legacy of Egypt, which is virtually a clone of longtime favourite “Monty” Montezuma from WMS. Following that we had Raging Rex, looking strikingly similar in the gameplay and name to WMS’s Raging Rhino, as well as the Starblast debacle, which Play’n GO had to rename into Crystal Sun after NetEnt threatened legal action for the apparent closeness to their most successful slot Starburst. Most recently, it was Perfect Gems raising the eyebrows as it resembles Big Time Gaming’s Megaways engine.
You might ask yourself now which game Play’n GO has taken as inspiration for The Sword and the Grail? Well, if you ever played 300 Shields or 300 Shields Extreme from NextGen, then you might as well skip to the bottom of the review as you will already know what to expect from this creation. High variance roller coasters with huge multipliers and mega win potential.
The Sword and the Grail is a video slot with five reels, three rows and 20 fixed pay lines. Wins are awarded for three to five matching symbols on a line from left to right only. Playable on desktop or mobile devices, the bet sizes range from 0.10 to 100 credits per spin. The game is highly volatile (10/10) with an RTP of 96.53%. Some casinos will offer the game with a lower RTP setting of 94.50%, make sure to read the help file to find out which version you will be playing.
I wonder sometimes what King Arthur would say knowing he is quite a regular on video slot reels. As usual, you have the mighty Camelot Castle with distant mountains serving as the backdrop to an intricate game window while the King himself together with Lancelot, Lady Guinevere and Merlin dominate on the reels. As we only had a game sheet available for the review, we cannot confirm what audio Play’n GO incorporated into the gameplay but will add that as soon as possible.
The design team went to great length to create an authentic appearance that goes into the smallest of details. Take the low-value symbols where we usually see normal card royals from 10 through to A, they appear on this slot engraved on medieval coins and award 2x to 4x your bet for a single five of a kind. They are followed by Merlin, Lancelot, Lady Guinevere and King Arthur at the high level. Hit five on a line to win 7.5x to 25x your stake.
The Grail (basically a medieval cup that promises eternal youth and happiness if you are lucky enough to drink from it) acts as the wild, substituting for all regular symbols. It is also the top payer with 50x your bet for a single five of a kind. As expected, Excalibur, the legendary sword of King Arthur is the scatter on this slot.
The Sword and The Grail Slot Features
The Grail will be indeed the reason for happy moments as it is the key to mega wins in the base game and free spins. Hit a winning combination containing the Grail wild in the base game and you will randomly benefit from an x2, x5, x10 or even an x100 multiplier. Note though that more than one wild with a multiplier in a combo will not be multiplied by each other. Land five wilds on a line with the maximum multiplier and you will have your first happy moment on this slot as it will pay a massive 5,000 times your bet.
The second time the Grail may be the reason for big win celebrations comes in the multi-level free spins feature. You will need minimum three Sword scatters on the reels in one spin to trigger it, which will get you to the first of four levels towards the x100 multiplier.
To advance through the levels you will have to collect sufficient Sword scatters before you run out of free spins. You will get a head start with 3, 4 or 5 Swords for triggering the round with three, four or five scatters respectively. Each level is completed before the next higher is played.
- Level 1: five free spins with an x2 multiplier, collect a total of six Sword scatters to advance
- Level 2: five additional free spins with an x5 multiplier, collect a total of 11 Sword scatters to advance
- Level 3: five more free spins with an x10 multiplier, collect a total of 18 Sword scatters to advance
- Level 4: five final free spins with an x100 multiplier
Once you are on level four, hold your breath and hope the multiplier wild will turn up in a winning combo as it will be almost guaranteed a mega win. Remember, the maximum is 10,000 times your stake.
Like most things connected with the legendary King Arthur, this slot is not for the fainthearted. Highly volatile, it will lead to merciless defeats but also to exhilarating moments when the maximum multipliers will appear on the reels. As with all slots in this category, we urge some caution on the bet size.
