Get ready to face four powerful Norse gods on the slot from Play’n GO. Viking Runecraft will let take you to Valhalla for an encounter with Thor, Freya, Heimdal and Odin, each rewarding you with their own random wild feature and a spin on the Runes of Valhalla bonus wheel. Progress far enough to trigger one of four Charge of Destruction modifiers that could lead to the Ragnarök bonus round with win multipliers of up to x15 and a win potential of up to 5,000 times your bet.

Slot Details

Viking Runecraft is a 7×7 grid slot with cascading symbols and cluster pays. Wins are awarded for clusters of five or more matching symbols that are connected horizontally and/or vertically. You can play with the Norse gods on desktop or mobile from 0.10 to 100 credits per spin. The game has high volatility (8/10) with an RTP of 96.71%.

There is a lot floating around on the screen when you load the game. Snow is falling on a rugged mountain scene in the background of the semi-transparent game window. On the left are three displays that will show you the progress in your play as well as trigger features. One of the four gods – Freya, Heimdal, Odin and Thor – stands on the right together with a pattern display that will determine which Gift of Gods you can trigger in the base game. An epic soundtrack with dramatic crescendos into the features rounds off a well-designed game.

Five rune stones engraved with Norse symbols in green, purple, blue, yellow and red colours are at the low end of the paytable, awarding 10x to 50x your bet for clusters of 15 symbols. They are complemented by Freya’s necklace, Heimdal’s axe, Odin’s helmet and Thor’s hammer at the high level. Hit cluster of 15 or more symbols to win 80x to 1,000x your stake.

The game has also four wild symbols, based on the four Norse gods and appearing only when the gods trigger their distinct feature. They will substitute for all pay symbols to help create winning clusters.

Viking Runecraft Slot Features

As much as is floating on the screen, there is even more to report on a whole array of random and bonus features that will make for intense gaming sessions. We will try our best to put everything in chronological order. First and foremost is the cascading reel mechanic that Play’n Go is using on this slot. At the start of every spin, a total of 49 symbols are dropped onto the grid. Scoring a winning cluster will see them explode and new symbols cascade into place, potentially leading to multiple winners within one spin sequence. The process continues as long as new winning clusters land after a cascade.

When you first load the game you will observe one of the four gods – Freya, Heimdal, Odin or Thor – standing to the right of the game window and a display with a pattern below. Each of the gods has its own random feature, which we will explain shortly. The same pattern is projected onto the game grid in blue colour. Hitting a winning cluster directly on top of the cluster will clear that part of the pattern and turn into golden colour. Completing a pattern will level you up in your warrior rank, starting from journeyman to Viking berserker and ending in the Hall of Gods in Valhalla. At the same time, the pattern and the active god are replaced. The warrior rank has no influence on the gameplay but can serve as a bragging tool since there are thousands of levels to go through and they are saved between sessions.

Your reward for completing a pattern is a spin on the Runes of Valhalla bonus wheel. A fixed percentage of 12% of the coin value of the low-value rune symbols is added to the bonus amount on the wheel. The wheel has 10 segments, five blanks and five winning segments marked with the low-value rune symbols. However, the winning segments activate only when you score a win with the respective rune symbol within the sequence of the same pattern. The bonus amount and active rune segments are shown in the display in the top left corner. Stopping on an active rune segment will award the accumulated bonus amount, which will then be added to any potential wins from the current spin.

Watch out if the initial cascade at the start of a spin sequence does not produce a winner as the active god on the right of the game window will trigger his or her Gift of the Gods. These are various wilds that will be randomly placed in specific patterns onto the grid based on which god is active.

  • Thor – God of Thunder: Turns 5 to 9 random symbols into wilds.
  • Odin – God of Wisdom: Two pairs of connected wilds are placed in random positions on the grid.
  • Freya – Goddess of Beauty: Wild symbols are created in four different clusters starting at a random position within the inner 5×5 area. The wild symbols are created four at a time until at least one win is awarded.
  • Heimdal – God of Guarding: Adds seven wilds to the grid, one in each row.

The number of symbols from all winning clusters within a spin sequence contribute to increasing the Charge Of Destruction meter. Full charging it with minimum 20 symbols will award one of four effects when no further winning clusters occur after a cascade.

  • Fury of Fenrir: Four diagonal lines of symbols are slashed on the grid. Two lines of symbols are removed, the other two lines of symbols are transformed to another symbol.
  • Judgment of Jörmungandr: A large number of symbols are destroyed in an unbroken path from one edge point of the grid to another edge point of the grid. Along the path, a number of different symbols are transformed into another single symbol.
  • Scorching of Surtr: Three symbols are set ablaze. The fire can spread to a random number of nearby symbols. All burning symbols are destroyed. In each cluster of burnt symbols, a core of new matching symbols is created.
  • Lure of Loki: Two different symbols are selected. All instances of one symbol will be removed from the grid while all instances of the second will transform into another symbol.

The game continues normally after the effect, allowing the charge meter to charge up for a second time. A single full charge following any of the four effects will trigger the Ragnarök feature, which awards one free game round with the four effects being triggered consecutively every time no new winning clusters occur after a cascade.

During the Ragnarök feature, the Charge of Destruction is replaced with an End of the World bonus meter. Collecting sufficient winning symbols during the entire Ragnarök feature will award extra win multipliers, which will be applied to the total win at the end of the round. It starts at x2 for 20 symbols and carries on with x3 for 40 symbols, x5 for 60 symbols and ultimately x15 for 80 symbols.

Final Verdict

Viking Runecraft is an intense game that will keep you on the edge throughout a session. With so much happening, there won’t be time to get bored or turned off. Ragnarök seems at times awfully hard to trigger which is rather normal for high volatility slot as it has the largest win potential from the entire gameplay.
