Marching Legions is a video slot with five reels, three reels and 243 ways to win. Pays are awarded for two to five matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from the leftmost only. You can be a reel warrior on desktop or mobile from 0.10 to 100 credits per spin. Everything is high on this humourous game, the volatility at 4/5, the RTP at 98.12% and the hit frequency at 25.62% (roughly 1:4 spins). Loading the game will place you in front of a Pantheon with the stone patio leading to it serving as the game area. Two legionnaires statues stand guard on either side of the reels while their comrades march bravely across the reels to deliver big wins. An epic soundtrack filled with marching horn blasts provides the fitting audio to this comical reel brawl.

The pay symbols start at the low end with carved stones in a yellow, blue and red hue depicting Caesar, an eagle and the Pantheon, awarding 1x to 1.2x your stake for a single five of a kind. They are followed by a sword, a statue of Caesar’s wreath and a battle standard. Hit five across the reels to win 2x to 3x your bet. Marching Legions Slot Features

Slots featuring legionnaires and gladiators are usually dark and intense games, trying to convey the atmosphere of the period. However, Relax Gaming decided to go the humorous route with its creation although they included some dramatic moments. Core to the gameplay is the fearless legionnaire as he is key to triggering the respins and free spins features. 

Landing a full stack of them encased in a golden frame will trigger the Marching Respins. The reels will respin at no cost with the stack moving by on reel to the left on each respin until it disappears from the screen. Hitting another full stack will start the Marching Stacks, seeing them move in lockstep across the reels. The feature ends when all stacks have left the game area and any accumulated wins are paid before the next spin starts.

Landing two or more legionnaire stacks in partial view only can randomly trigger the Nudge feature that will see them nudge up or down to cover the entire reel and start the Marchin Stacks Respins. However, it will not trigger if you already have full stacks on any reels.

While spinning the reels, keep an eye on the Collection Meter held on the legionnaire helmet to the side of the screen. It starts at Level 1 and you will need to complete Level 5 to trigger the Free Spins feature. Every full legionnaire stack that leaves the game area is added to the meter with 66 required to level up. Hence, it can take some considerable time to enter the main event, which is reflected in the relatively high average feature win coming in at 116.5x your bet. Going by our test results, we estimate the Free Spins to generally trigger in the 600-700 spins range, going occasionally as high as 3,000 spins (not a typo). Any progress is saved between sessions.

The bet value for each collected stack is accumulated to calculate an average bet size for the feature, which must be an integer multiplier of the minimum bet. If it is not, it is rounded according to the rules of stochastic rounding, e.g. if the average comes in at 10.2x the minimum bet, with a 20% probability it will be rounded to 20x the minimum bet and with an 80% probability it will be rounded to 10x.

Once you reach Level 5, it will start the Free Spins round with no set number of spins. Instead, you get a full legionnaire placed as Wave 1 on reel five which will move across the reels in the same fashion as in the Marching Respins. Any further full stack landing will extend the currently active wave sequence.

You also get a new Collection Meter that will progress you through the different stages of the feature. A horn symbol is added to reel five and any landing will be added to the meter. Collect three horns to advance to Wave 2 after the last stack from the Wave 1 phase has left the screen. Two stacks will now be placed on reels four and five, marching again across the reels. Collecting again three horns will get you to Wave 3  and so on until you reach Wave 5 where five stacks are placed on the reels covering the entire screen. Wave 5 can be retriggered as long as you collect three horns before the last stack has left the game area or you hit the maximum win which is capped at 10,000 times your bet.

Players lucky enough to be in a jurisdiction, where feature buys are still allowed, can take a shortcut and gain direct access to the main event. Clicking on Free Spins Buy will bring up a screen to display the amount it will cost, which is 120x your base bet, and start the feature the soon you have confirmed the purchase.

Final Verdict

Well, that was some jolly good fun slotting. Marching Legions is very entertaining to play if you can live with the long periods between the free spins triggers. The Marching Stacks hit often enough to keep you interested and actually lead often enough to sizeable wins that will help your playing balance. Truly exceptional is the very high RTP of 98.12%, something that is extremely rare these days. Beware though, the game has high volatility and will at times go through your balance with little remorse. But then, who thinks a brave legionnaire’s life is an easy one.
