Slot Details

Nibelungen is a video slot with five reels, three rows and five fixed pay lines. Wins are awarded for two to five matching symbols landing on a line from left to right only. You can delve into Germanic legends on desktop, tablet or mobile from 0.50 to 100 credits per spin. The game has medium to high volatility with a default RTP of 95.25%. In some markets, it will be offered with a 95.13% setting.

The Nibelungen saga has Norse and Germanic origins although the latter is the more commonly told legend surrounding the Burgundian royal house. Tales of love and intrigue evolve around the main characters Siegfried, Brunhild, Gunther and Kriemhild. All but Brunhilde are appearing on the finely framed reels with a forest scene in the background.

The pay symbols start at the low end with card royals from 10 through to A, awarding 20x to 30x your bet for a single five of a kind. They are followed by the dragon, the two valiant saga heroes and the warrior princess. Hit five on a line to win 150x to 1,000x your stake. The sword is the wild and scatter, substituting for all other pay symbols and also triggering the bonus feature when minimum three land anywhere on the reels. Hitting three, four or five will pay 2x, 20x, and 200x your total bet respectively.

Nibelungen Slot Features

Playing a 5-liner brings back fond memories of ‘ye good ol’ times’ of yesteryear. This type of slot has withstood the test of time and still has a large following in the player community. Few pay lines, fast-paced, volatile, even hardcore at times and surely never an easy reel battle to win. Swintt took it a step further and included two free spin modes in the gameplay, each capable to deliver the max win cap of 5,000 times the bet.

Nibelungen Kriemhild Free Spins

Hitting three, four or five scatters anywhere the reels will trigger the Free Games feature and pay the coins wins as described above. The game will lead to a second screen, giving you two options for your bonus round. You can choose any at each occasion. Both share similarities with the “Book of…” mechanic and can be very volatile.

  • Siegfried Free Games with expanding symbol: When selected, a wheel with two rings will appear, giving you one spin to randomly determine the expanding symbol and the number of free spins – 8, 10 or 12. Landing sufficient symbols will see them expand and pay the win for each line even when they are not on adjacent reels.
  • Kriemhild Free Games with expanding wilds: When selected, a wheel with 10 rune stones appears. Pick one at a time to reveal a random number of free spins until you hit collect. The total number of free spins ranges from 6 to 25. Any wild landing during the feature will expand to full reel height.
Nibelungen Gamble

Lastly, Swintt also included a Gamble feature. You can risk any win to try and double it up to nine times or quadruple it up to four times in row, all with a maximum capped at 50,000 coins. Select RED or BLACK to double or suits to quadruple your win. You can collect at any time.

Final Verdict

While highly playable, Nibelungen is not a slot for the fainthearted. The volatility that is inherent to 5-liners can see your balance vanish with no remorse but is also providing a good chance that it goes the other way, due to the high line pays. The bonus games are both suspenseful, whereas I felt that the Kriemhild mode was slightly less volatile. Probably just a subjective verdict from the hours of testing as it gave me better wins.
