Don your explorer gear for a reel adventure that will take you deep into the Mesoamerican jungle on the slot from Yggdrasil Gaming. Temple Stacks Splitz is the first release with their newly developed reel mechanic that can split symbols from three up to 12 rows high, leading to an insane amount of up to 248,832 ways to win. The Splitz Mystery Stacks are combined with wild symbols, hybrid scatters, respins and four free spin modes that can lead to wins of up to 25,000 times your bet in a single spin.

Slot Details

Temple Stacks is a video slot with five reels, three rows and 243 ways to win in default mode. This can increase to up to 12 rows and 248,832 ways through the newly developed Splitz Mystery Stacks mechanic (more to that in a moment). Wins are awarded for two to five matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right only. You can embark on your Aztec reel adventure on desktop or mobile from 0.10 to 100 credits per spin. The game has medium to high volatility with an RTP of 96.10%.

Loading the game will take you into the midst of a dense jungle with steps leading to the hidden Aztec temple. The game window is placed at the top of the stairs and flanked by tribal stone columns that are ornamented with jaguar head statues. The reels are populated by large gem blocks in a variety of colours and structures, which will reduce in size when the Splitz feature activates. Lush greenery and a tribal soundtrack complete the slot design.

All pay symbols appear as square blocks in different colours. Those at the low end are marked with artistic depictions of blue fish, green monkeys, purple eagles, brown jaguars and red snakes. Pays for a single five of a kind are 0.5x your bet across the board. They are complemented by high-value gems in brighter colours – blue, green, purple, orange and red. Hit five across the reels to win 1x to 2.5x your stake.

In addition to the standard scatter and wild symbol, the game has a hybrid Free Spin symbol that will act as wild when only two land and as a scatter when three, four or five hit in one spin or respin. The wilds will substitute for all other pay symbols.

Temple Stacks Splitz Slot Features

Yggdrasil Gaming is finally jumping into the frail of dynamic reels, however, not via a licence for the Megaways engine from Big Time Gaming as many of its peers have chosen to do, but instead, with their own development they called very creatively Splitz as in splitting symbols.

The base for Temple Stacks is a standard 5×3 reel set with 243 ways where 15 symbols are reeled in on every spin. Splitz Mystery Stacks can appear on any reel in the main game and free spins, either as full stacks or covering just one or two positions. Once landed, all stacks in view will split in the main game into 3 – 9 identical pay symbols, up to three for each position on the reel. During the free spins, they will split into 3 – 12 symbols, up to four for each reel position.

This effectively increases the ways to win to any number between 243 and 248,832 ways. The maximum number can only be achieved in the free spins when all five reels are fully covered with Splitz Mystery Stacks and all five splitting into 12 symbols. Any win evaluation is done after the splits.

There is one kicker though that will provide suspenseful moments any time it happens. When multiple stacks land in one spin and a win is guaranteed, three potential wins are displayed at the top of the game window. The game will then randomly select one of them and then turn the splitz into the correspondent pay symbol (see screenshot further down).

Hitting two scatters anywhere on the reels in one spin will trigger the Respin feature. The triggering scatters turn in to sticky hybrid scatter/wild symbols before awarding a single respin to potentially land the missing scatter. If it doesn’t land, then the symbols will count as wilds, performing their usual substitutions.

Three, four or five scatters in view, either straight in or after a respin will trigger the Free Spins feature as well as awarding a coin win of 1x, 10x and 100x your total bet respectively. The game will lead to a second screen with four levels of Free Spins. The first one is unlocked as default, while the other will gradually become available with the next three feature triggers.

You can pick any of the four modes – Steel with 3-9 Splitz, Bronze with 4-10 Splitz, Silver with 5-11 Splits, Gold with 6-12 Splitz – once all four have been unlocked. The volatility of the feature increases directly relative to the maximum number of Splitz. The amount of Free Spins is based on how many scatters trigger the feature.

  • 3-Scatter Trigger: 15 Steel | 9 Bronze | 6 Silver | 3 Gold Free Spins
  • 4-Scatter Trigger: 20 Steel | 12 Bronze | 8 Silver | 4 Gold Free Spins
  • 5-Scatter Trigger: 35 Steel | 21 Bronze | 14 Silver | 7 Gold Free Spins

The feature is then played according to your selection. The Splitz will be coloured in either of the four colours according to the chosen feature and will split within the range for the respective free spin mode. Landing three or more scatters on a free spin will retrigger the same number corresponding to the active feature. The maximum win in a single spin is capped at 25,000 times your bet.

Final Verdict

It has been a rumour for some time that Yggdrasil Gaming was working on their own version for dynamic reels. The question was only whether they would include reactive wins as we have become accustomed to with Megaways games. While that has not happened, the concept is still well executed and adds an element of suspense to the gameplay, and that in addition to increasing the number of win ways. Remains to be seen how the casino community will react to the reel mechanic. One thing is for sure, equaling the Megaways popularity won’t be a walk in the park but it showed potential in our test runs.
