Roulette

The worlds most played table game originally first appeared in France, Roulette meaning little wheel. It dates back as far as the 18th Century and the initial concept prior to development was first thought to have come from Frenchman Blaise Pascal before this is the 17th century.

Roulette quickly took off as a firm favourite amongst gamblers around the globe and has been played by centuries in casinos and licenced clubs and more recently joined the online market, quickly establishing a huge and regular player base.

There are nowadays many, many versions of roulette available but the seemingly more popular and commonly sought has to be American Roulette.

In this version the outcomes are decided by a circular wheel, usually constructed of metal in land based casinos with a wooden frame and a plastic ball is used. Online we see the virtual wheel either spun by the player after placing their bets or in some cases by an actual person, these are known as live dealer where players can be part of live action right from their computers or preferred playing devices.

The wheel itself is made up of 37 individual red and black sections, numbered from one to 36. There is a single green section numbered zero. In certain versions of this game there is occasionally an extra green section opposite zero, namely double zero.

How to Play Roulette?

Each spin when the ball comes to rest will reveal a single winning number. Any bets placed on this number will be paid out to the player as detailed below

  • Red/Black – Correctly betting on the colour matching the winning number pays even money
  • Odd/Even – Correctly betting on the colour matching the winning number pays even money
  • High (19-36) / Low (1-18) – Correctly betting on the colour matching the winning number pays even money
  • Dozens – Winning bets on the correct dozen pays 2-1. First dozen 1-12, second dozen 13-24, third dozen 25-36.
  • Columns – Placing a bet on the winning column also pays 2-1
  • Six Line – A bet covering six numbers in two adjacent rows (Eg: 4,5,6,7,8,9) pays 5-1
  • Street – Stakes covering three numbers in a single row (Eg: 10,11,12) pays 11-1
  • Corner – A bet covering four numbers (Eg: 1,2,4,5) will return 8-1
  • Split – Bets covering just two numbers (Eg: 17,20) pays a player 17-1.
  • Straight Up – A single bet placed on just one number.

As the house has two numbers in their favour this game will roughly carry a return to player of 94.5%.

The Roulette wheel is also incredible in design, in that there is an equal distribution throughout of red, black, odd, even, high and low numbers. You will not find two of a kind together on the wheel. Interestingly also, if you were to add the numbers together on the wheel from one to 36, they total 666, hence some giving it the nickname ‘ The Devil’s Game’
