Saddle your horses and get your six-shooter ready as the gang of five outlaws from the epic Dead or Alive slot is riding again. Dead or Alive 2 is the sequel to Netent’s legendary original, which is better known as DOA in the player community. The slot comes with more features and a cranked-up win potential of up to 111,111 times your bet.

The immense popularity of the original Dead or Alive slot has given NetEnt quite a challenge to create a sequel that does the legendary game justice. And it looks like they’ve done just that. It is still a 9-liner, the sticky wilds in the free spins round have been kept, ensuring we can still celebrate hitting a wild line on the Dead or Alive 2 slot. But there is more, they’ve given the new slot three options for the free spins – Old Saloon with sticky wilds and multipliers in the same style as the original, followed by High Noon Saloon with sticky multiplier wilds and Train Heist with increasing win multipliers of up to x16.

Update 14th April 2020: It seems NetEnt has succumbed to market pressures and will offer DoA II with a Feature Buy option where regulations allow it. Players will have to fork out 66.66x bet for one spin that will be guaranteed to land three or more scatters. This will award instant access to the free spins selector where they can choose any of the three options. The updated version of DoA was scheduled to go live on 11th May 2020 but was ultimately postponed to a later date.

Update 28th September 2020: After pushing back the release of the Bonus Buy version of Dead or Alive 2 earlier this year, NetEnt is now readying it for launch on 20th October 2020. As mentioned, it will cost 66.66x your default bet to buy a free spins round.

Slot Details

Dead or Alive II is a video slot with five reels, three rows and nine fixed pay lines. Wins are awarded for three to five matching symbols on a line from left to right only. You can join the gang of outlaws on desktop or mobile from 0.09 to 18 credits, however, some operators will offer it with lower maximum bets. The RTP of this high variance game is set at 96.80%, which is exactly the same as the original.

NetEnt went to great length to keep as much as possible of the original but gave the entire design a modern touch. A typical Western town can be seen in the background of the translucent game window. The reels are now completely frameless and held only by wooden beams that are usually used for hangings. The gang of five outlaws is riding in the same formation – Billy, Belle, Jesse, Della and Apache and the other pay symbols have received a makeover while the soundtrack played on an acoustic guitar.

The pay symbol set went through a complete modernisation cycle but remained exactly the same as on the original just as the pays for a five of a kind. This means you will find at the low end the card royals from 10 through to A. They are followed in ascending order by a whiskey glass and bottle, a pair of cowboy boots, a cowboy hat, a holster with a handgun and a sheriff star. A five of a kind will pay 2.77x to 111.11x your bet.

The wild symbols are the five characters, each appearing on his/her own reel. Hitting five on a line in the base game pays 166.66x bet which is minimum doubled in the free spins. Scatters are a pair of colts with five awarding a huge win of 2,500x your stake.

The Dead or Alive II Slot Features

While the original had just the one, yet immensely suspenseful free spins round, NetEnt is giving you three choices on the Dead or Alive 2 slot. You will need to hit minimum three scatters to be led to a separate screen where you can pick your favourite feature. Each comes with 12 free spins, which cannot be retriggered as such but the game will award five extra spins when you hit sufficient sticky wilds or multipliers.

  • Train Heist Free Spins – medium volatility: Whenever a wild lands on a free spin, the win multiplier is increased by x1 up to x16 and one extra spin is awarded. The wilds are not sticky in this feature. Reaching an x16 multiplier will trigger an extra five free spins. The remaining free spins are all played with the maximum multiplier.
  • Old Saloon Free Spins – high volatility: The round as we know it from the original DOA. During the feature, all wins are multiplied by x2 and the aim is to hit sticky wilds on each reel and even better when they land on a pay line. Five extra spins are awarded when at least one wild is on each of the five reels.
  • High Noon Saloon Free Spins – sky-high volatility: Initially no win multipliers but any wilds landing on a free spin will be sticky. When two or three wild symbols land on the same reel, they turn into x2 and x3 multiplier wilds. The multipliers apply only when they are part of a winning combination. All other wins are paid without being multiplied. More than one multiplier wild on a line will be multiplied by each other. Five extra spins are awarded when at least one wild is on each of the five reels.

Final Verdict

We waited for years to get a sequel to the all-time favourite Dead or Alive slot and it has finally arrived. I can foresee that Dead or Alive 2 will be a high-volatility monster that will have you buzzing in every session. The win potential with over 100,000x bet is just insane and could lead to a player becoming a millionaire with a win on a non-progressive slot.
