Slot Details

Superstars is a video slot with five reels, five rows and 45 fixed pay lines. Wins are awarded for three to five matching symbols landing on a line from left to right only. You can join the Netent stars on desktop, tablet or mobile from 0.10 to 100 credits per spin. The game has medium to high volatility with a default RTP of 96.08%. Lower models are offered at 94.06% and 92.01%.

A colourful show stage opens up when you load the slot, providing the fitting background to the Superstars party that will go down on the reels. The most iconic characters such as Lady Pig and Gonzo feature in the gameplay accompanied by a lively disco soundtrack. Nothing special really, but it looks modern enough.

Superstars

The pay symbols start at the low end with card royals 10 through to A, awarding 0.5x to 1x your bet for a single five of a kind. They are followed by Lady Pig, Finn, the Brute, Gonzo and Starburst. Hit five on a line to win 2x to 5x your stake. A star-filled icon is the wild, performing the usual substitution duties while a diamond acts as the scatter. Lastly, a dice can land on reel five, which will count as a scatter and provide an extra throw in the bonus game.

Superstars Slot Features

It was only a matter of time for NetEnt to gather their most iconic game characters and combine them into one slot. Each is well known in the casino community from their distinct slots that have paved NetEnt’s way to become one of the leading providers in iGaming. Virtually everyone will have tried at some point Starburst or Gonzo’s Quest during their slotting sessions. Let’s join the reel party to see what’s on offer.

Superstars
Superstars – Bonus Game

To put it rather mildly, the base game is more than nonchalant and uninspiring as the line pays are very low and with no random modifiers, your only hope is to land either at least three scatters or minimum two plus the dice on reel five. Any of the combos will trigger the board-style Bonus Game with initially three spins added to the counter.

A board will appear with the 5×5 grid in the centre and all triggering scatters including the dice transform into a sticky coin value between 1x and 25x bet. If a Dice was part of the triggering spin, you’ll get your first throw right at the start. A red token will move from the START position the number of steps from the dice roll and will trigger extra features should it land on one of the marked fields.

Superstars Bonus

The reels will spin and landing any new coin prize will reset the counter to three. Hitting one or more dice will get you one roll for each. Any triggered Bonus Features will play out before the next spin. Here’s what’s on the board:

  • Finn – 4-leaf Clover: Finn will appear to add +5 for up to five prizes in view and combine them into a single sticky icon, freeing up the other positions.
  • Gonzo: The conquistador will multiply up to 24 prizes in view by x2, x3, or x5. A prize can be chosen multiple times.
  • Lady Pig – Piggy Bank: Adds up to 15 prizes between 1x and 5x to the reels. If placed on top of another, then the values are added.
  • The Brute – Space Craft: Awards 3 Space Wars Respins. The three top prizes are selected and the reels respin. Any landing on a free position will turn sticky.
  • Starburst: Adds a stack of three equal prizes between 2x and 5x to one reel. At least one will be placed on top of an existing prize. The two factors are then multiplied by each other.
  • Extra Spins – Double Arrow: Stop on the field in the top right corner to increase the default number of spins on the counter from 3 to 4.
  • Start: Complete a full circle to receive +1 life. This will trigger once you run out of respins and reset the counter to 3 or 4 based on what the default was.

And there is more. A rainbow-coloured wheel can appear on the board track and landing on it will trigger a single spin on a Feature Wheel. The extras that can be won are +1 or +2 Dice Rolls; an +1 increase for all prizes on the reels; all empty spots on the board track are marked with 1x which will be added to all in view should the token stop on any of them; the Random feature; and lastly the Replay feature.

The Random feature will bring up yet another wheel displaying the five character bonuses. It will spin once to award an extra feature. The Replay feature will repeat the next activated character or Upgrade bonus.

The aim is to fill all positions on the grid to advance to the Final Game. No easy feat, just as a small spoiler alert, but when you do then all squares on the board game will be assigned a random prize at 25x, 50x, 75x, 100x, 500x, or 1,000x times. You will get now a number of dice throws to collect some of the extra prizes. The exact amount of dice throws is a rather convoluted calculation:

  • The number of dice rolls left on the counter at the Final Game trigger
  • Plus, the default number of respins (3 or 4)
  • Plus, the number of Extra Lives left multiplied by the default number of respins.
  • Any unused Replay feature will double the initial number of dice rolls before the extras are added.

Last but not least, NetEnt included a Bonus Buy option which will allow players in unrestricted jurisdictions to bypass the base game and head straight to the main event. The cost is rather steep at 150x your stake. Once confirmed, the game will start a spin that is guaranteed to trigger the Bonus Game.

Final Verdict

A cynical mind would say that there is a lot of hot air in the gameplay for nothing or just little reward. NetEnt could have opted for another blockbuster slot considering the popularity of their main characters, something in the league of Dead or Alive maybe. Instead, they chose to create a slot for the masses that even the most recreational player will try at some point, be that just for the flashy colours.

The base game is boring as hell for anyone that is not a superfan of the NetEnt characters and the bonus game is a longwinded affair that rarely surpasses 100x bet as winning amount. Oh, what a missed opportunity to give us a real alternative to Money Train 2 or 3.
